Swanage Railway Permanent Way
In charge of installing and maintaining all of the track and lineside for the railway, our Permanent Way (or simply P-Way for short) team provide an indispensable service, working year-round and in all weathers!
Permanent Way
Our P-Way team consists of full-time employees and eager volunteers who love being out in the open (rain or shine!) doing the heavy work to keep our track and lineside infrastructure in top condition.
Most of the work is carried out during the week with only an emergency response team on duty at weekends.
One of the highlights, from a volunteers point of view, is the weekly line walk, covering the entire 5.5 mile distance from Norden to Swanage checking all joints and sleeper fittings as you go!
If you enjoy physical work outside in a team, then why not volunteer for P-Way today?
Useful Information
Volunteering with our Permanent Way team is a great way to get out of the house and work on some interesting and varied infrastructure projects. In the past it has also worked as a springboard for our younger volunteers looking for railway experience to help them find work in the industry.
Is this role for me? The work is largely outdoors (year-round) and can be physically demanding so a good level of fitness and stamina is recommended.
