Swanage Railway Porter

Very much in the public eye and often the first contact for the general public, our porters act as our ambassadors on the platform, as well as ensuring our passengers and trains are safe.

Swanage Railway Volunteer - Signaller

Porter

Becoming a porter on the Swanage Railway can either be the first step to other operational roles such as guard or signaller or it can be a rewarding and fun role in itself.

When we’re operating our heritage steam and diesel services, the porter makes sure that our passengers get on and off the trains safely and in a timely manner as well as helping anyone with buggies, wheelchairs or with limited mobility.

The training covers all aspects of train operation from the platform, on a station by station basis and you will cover the basics of signalling and guarding to enable you to carry out the role.

Portering is a fun and social way to enjoy volunteering as you will become part of a dedicated and enthusiastic team – a vital cog in the working of the railway.

Useful Information

Your porter traing comprises of an initial induction session to explain the process and then training turns at each of our manned stations (Swanage, Harmans Cross, Corfe Castle & Norden). You will be assigned a trainer for each of these turns who will help you master the role as time goes on.

Is this role for me? Portering is an active role and will involve you being on your feet for most of the day. If you are interested in this role but have concerns about your ability to stay standing for long periods, please contac tus and we will endeavour to find a solution for you.
